Yashiro Chikama (知我麻 社 Chikama Yashiro) is a friend of Hino Akira, who met while they were fishing.
Appearance[]
Chikama wears a full body spacesuit. It has childish design elements, such as hearts and star patches. According to Yashiro, her face wasn't ready, so she couldn't let people see what she looked like underneath her helmet.

About up to the third episode in the anime, we see Chikama's human form. In her human form, she has light blue hair, fair skin and a white dress on. She is surrounded by light covering her whole body. According to Chikama, her eyes aren't actually real. She created them, so she could fit in with humans.
Personality[]
Yashiro likes sweets as much as she is searching for her brethren that she can smell sweets at long distances (this was shown in her first Fireworks festival) and even when there's an obstruction (shown when she immediately noticed the sweet smell on Shimamura's hand despite wearing a helmet). She is admired by both Shimamura and her little sister. Shimamura stated that she admires Yashiro for her kindness without malice while also admiring her eyes that is so beautiful it resembles space itself. Despite being bubbly and weird, she can give good advice when it counts. Shimamura's mother also finds her in Yashiro as the way she and Shimamura runs are the same when she still was a little kid.
Yashiro has a loving personality as she expresses her 'love' for different people she has come to know and form connections with.
History[]
It is unclear when Yashiro first appeared on earth, but according to her, she has been looking for her companion. She apparently thought all people from earth wear a spacesuit which is why she decided to start her exploration of earth wearing one.

Hino tells Shimamura about a mysterious girl wearing a spacesuit by the fishing area. Shimamura is shocked to see that Yashiro is real.

When Shimamura and her family go to visit her grandparents, Yashiro offers to watch the house. However, when it becomes clear they don't wish for her to have the run of the house when they aren't around, she respects their wishes. Shimamura briefly worries about where Yashiro could stay, but she ultimately decides she shouldn't worry about it.
Yashiro and Nagafuji Taeko cross paths after Nagafuji is kicked out of Hino's house due to her family's planned trip. Nagafuji allows Yashiro to come with her.

Flash Forward[]
Ten years in the future, Yashiro apparently regularly visits Adachi and Shimamura at their apartment, and she remains a resident at the Shimamura household. Shimamura can't help but wonder how she makes the trek between places but ultimately decides not to question it.
Before Shimamura leaves for her trip, she checks to make sure Yashiro didn't somehow sneak into her bag again.
Present Day[]
Shimamura discovers that Yashiro had somehow managed to sneak into her bag and somehow manage to fit inside it despite how little room there should be.
Yashiro is able to maintain her cover inside Shimamura's bag throughout the trip despite several close calls,

Adachi runs into Yashiro while she is hanging out with Hino and Nagafuji on the night before she moves into her new apartment with Shimamura. Adachi is then surprised when Yashiro decides to continue spending time with her rather than going along with her other two friends when they leave.Yashiro tells Adachi she loves her much to Adachi's confusion.

During their initial meetings, Adachi felt a great deal of annoyance at her presence.
She even feared that Yashiro might randomly show up and ruin any moment that she wished she share with Shimamura.
According to Shimamura in the flashforward of Volume 08, Adachi has become much more tolerant of Yashiro.
Out of the entire cast, it is indicated Hino was the first one that Yashiro interacted with.
In the time skip of Volume 10, the two appeared to have remained on friendly as she was hanging out with her.
Nagafuji took note that Yashiro looks kind of similar to her family mascot, and she took her home with her during Volume 06.
Etymology[]
- Chikama means "wisdom" (知) (chi), "ego, I, selfish, our, oneself" (我) (ka) and "hemp, flax" (麻) (ma).
- Yashiro means "company, Shinto shrine" (社).
Trivia[]
- In Chikama's introduction, she explains that she has come to Earth to find her brethren.
- Like Hino, Chikama makes her own sound effects, the most notably being the "breathing" sound for their space suit.
- It is implied that Chikama had known Adachi, Shimamura, Tarumi, Nagafuji and Hino when they were still kids and was shown to mediate the situation between Adachi and Shimamura during that time. She also stated that finding her brethren will require her 3,000 years in human time. She said her kind tend to live for 800 million years.
- Chikama appears to be aware of different potential timelines when she mentioned to Shimamura that her meeting Adachi was a constant in every timeline.
- According to Chikama, it is against the rules for her to prove that she is an alien, similar to how Mikuru tells Kyon in Haruhi Suzumiya that she can’t show him anything from the future.
